Students within the NJUHS District

  • Contact your current school counselor who will talk with you and your parent/guardian about your decision and send a screen form to Silver Springs.
  • Someone from Silver Springs will contact you to make arrangements to complete your transfer and meet with an academic counselor..
(If you have an IEP, your Team must determine and agree on placement at Silver Springs - you should request this from your case manager.)

Students outside of the NJUHS District

  • Provide transcripts from current school.
  • Complete an inter-district transfer form generated from the district you live in and provide your student's most recent grades, attendance, and discipline notes when submitting the form to our district office for review (e: transfers@njuhsd.com).
  • Inter-district transfers may be denied or revoked based on unsatisfactory attendance, grades, and/or behavior.  Appeals for denied and/or revoked transfers should be made by sending an email to transfers@njuhsd.com within 10 days of the denial/revocation.  Failure to meet the timeline shall be deemed an abandonment of the request.
  • Once approved by the District, Silver Springs will contact you to make arrangements for you to meet with the Adacemic Counselor and complete the steps to transfer.
(If you have an IEP, your Team must determine and agree on placement at Silver Springs - you should request this from your case manager.)
Involuntary Transfer
A decision to transfer a student involuntarily into continuation education classes shall be based on a finding that the student:
  • Committed an act enumerated in Education Code 48900.
  • Has been habitually truant or irregular in attendance from instruction the student is lawfully required to attend.
Involuntary transfer to a continuation school shall be made only when other means fail to bring about student improvement. However, a student may be involuntarily transferred the first time an act enumerated in Education Code 48900 is committed if the principal determines that the student's presence causes a danger to persons or property or threatens to disrupt the instructional process.

No involuntary transfer to a continuation school shall extend beyond the end of the semester following the semester when the acts leading to the involuntary transfer occurred.

Voluntary Enrollment
As space permits, students who meet the eligibility criteria specified in Board policy may voluntarily enroll in a continuation school. A student may be considered for placement in the continuation school whenever the student's parent/guardian submits a written request to the Superintendent or designee or the student is referred by a counselor or school administrator.  Approval of a student's voluntary transfer shall be based on a finding that the placement will promote the educational interests of the student.

Voluntary enrollment shall be subject to the following conditions:
  • To the extent possible, voluntary transfer to a continuation school shall occur following the academic quarter, or at the start of each semester.
  • A student who is voluntarily enrolled in continuation education may return to the regular high school at the beginning of the following school year, or at any other time with the consent of the Superintendent or designee.

Other Considerations for Enrollment
  • Students who are credit deficient with no path to graduation at the comprehensive high school and who still have a viable path to graduation at the continuation school.
  • Students who are chronically absent from school and for whom the continuation school offers a reasonable advantage for improved attendance (i.e. home in close proximity to the school, unavoidable family or work dynamics that make attending a full day not feasible and for which the continuation model makes it feasible).
  • Is a victim of an act of bullying committed by another district student, as determined through an investigation following the parent/guardian's submission of a written complaint with the school, district, or local law enforcement agency pursuant to Education Code 234.1, as outlined by Board Policy 5116.1.
  • Students, who lack progress following a documented systematic approach aimed at improvement have failed, as outlined in the student’s IEP, 504, SST will be considered if it is determined that the student would benefit from the continuation setting.
